Hmmm Oris

Post by Slowpo on Sat Jun 11, 2011 3:04 am

I guess Oris care more about the case of the watch than the movement.

I'm a watchmaker and I've serviced a bunch of Oris watches, with both the ETA movements (such as 2824-2, 2836, 2671, 2897, 7750) and SW200 movements. I've never seen any finishing or additional decoration outside of the red paint on the rotor.

In most cases they use a bit of a hybrid grade ETA movement, so the watches have Incabloc shock protection like the ETA Top and Chronometer versions do, but not a Glucydur balance or upgraded balance spring. I suspect they are ordered from the movement maker in the specification that they choose, rather than doing any upgrades themselves.

Still if they are tweaked carefully they can have very good timing results.

Cheers, Al

I am not sure what you are saying? They take movements and modify them and are upfront about what they do. And they openly list on their site what the base movements they use are. And respectfully, who is Al?

I am an Oris fan and own 2 currently. I think they are a nice Swiss brand for the money with some great designs and styles and excellent quality The 2 I currently own -

Many luxury brands, IWC leaps to mind, do the same with their movements.
No big deal. Oris is upfront about it.
I don't own the brand, though.

Not sure what "finishing" or "extra decoration" would create additional value or add exclusivity to Oris as a brand. Oris is not a luxury brand - never have been and don't aspire to be. Honest Swiss watches honestly made. An "as it comes from the factory" standard grade ETA movement is perfectly adequate for Oris' applications and does not need to be extensively reworked inhouse by Oris to exhibit accurate timing characteristics. They are not a manufacture or an artistic "high drama" atelier operation and charge accordingly reasonable prices for what most consider well crafted, reliable watches.

Oris is an entry-level Swiss watch. You'll pay more for the level of decoration and finish if you want an Omega and a LOT more for a high-end watch with manufacture movement, like a Patek.

I like Oris very much. Currently own a Big Crown 7750, and am on the hunt for a small second diver. I have seen some corners cut by the brand however. The first Diver-Date I owned in 2006 was not even an Elabore grade 2824. Straight bottom of the line ETA with a red rotor. I have also seen a couple of their retro Big Crown series watches marked "25 Jewels" on the dial, when there was clearly a 26 Jewel SW200 powering the watch.
Otherwise I think they cannot be beat, and am a big fan.

So does Oris modify their own movements or is it done by the movement manufacturer. Take the worldtimer movement:

Does Oris add the complications to the base 2836-2 or did ETA. I know they won a Red Dot Award for it, though to be honest with you I have no idea how much weight that really carries.

I am in agreement here with the others about Oris being up front. From what I understand they make their own modifications to the ETA movements, which is why they re-name many of the movements, but I certainly could be wrong. Anyhow, they make a great watch for the money and I have never had a problem with any if the three I own. But I don't care about pretty decorations on my watches unless I am buying a luxury timepiece.

As long as the movement is accurate a reliable who the hell cares how it looks. Don't really understand what your trying to get at here.

I can't say it better than Falstaff and Aqua have, and I am jealous of TVDinner's watches.

To me, Oris is the bomb. I consider the two I own among my best and one is my absolute favorite.

The brand might be entry-level Swiss to some, but the quality is just what I want.

I don't own an Oris but it's one brand that's high on my want list. From what I read on this and other forums Oris is held in high regard by WIS and I believe that they're pretty much up-front as to movements, point of assembly etc, at least that is my understanding.
To me at least, movement decoration/finishing, or lack thereof, is not something that is high on my priority list.

Would love to hear a discussion comparing Oris and Tag Heuer...
Don't both use modified Sellita movements currently?
Haven't owned either but lust few models from both.

This is one of the two I own, I cannot see the movement on this one ( base 7750 ) but I can see the movt. On the hawker hunter and they both keep great time. I personally don't care what they do or don't do to them....they are very high quality and I love them both.

Is that the brand new TT1 fatman? How do you like the difference in size with the wider bezel?

Kabby,
No, this is the pro diver. Very nice watch but with the size and being all titanium it is very difficult to wear. What I mean is that for the size it is very light light and comfortable. I just cannot get to grips with the weight / size ratio. thick headed I guess.

That one is 51mm I believe. I have seen them in person and it is a large sized watch.

I tried that one on the other day, and yes it is HUGE. I was actually a bit taken aback by it. Maybe Invicta has actually had a bit of design juice in the industry, who knows. I also know exactly what you mean about the deceptive lightness. It doesn't "feel" right. They also have the brand new Titan model that looks a bit like a diver-date, but is a massive 49mm and has the huge ceramic bezel that snaps up and down to allow ratcheting. Pretty cool design actually, but it was a bit pricey!

Yes, 51mm. After wearing many maegalodon at 47mm in SS wearing this 51mm is quite the difference. Only weighs about a 1/3 of the meg.

The build quality, accuracy, ceramic bezel, and the patented locking bezel on the oris is top shelf all of the way.

Thanks for the info. I have the 47mm TT1 and thought that was light for the size....I agree the 51mm would throw me off. My 47mm is the largest watch I own.
