I have a pretty good size modern Accutron collection. I briefly owned a vintage that I bought from an ebay dealer but unlike his contention that it ran perfectly, it didn't run at all so it was returned.

I don't understand why modern Accutrons seemed to disrespected by some. All that I have, both quartz and mechanical are some of the nicest, well made watches I have ever owned. I have two VJ 7750's, an anniversary numbered Astronaut, and two very nice quartz models. Granted, all were purchased prior to Citizen's acquisition of Bulova/Accutron but any Citizen watch I have ever owned has been top notch as well.

Any theories as to why Accutron is not held in high regard?

Rusty,

I can't figure it out either. My wife owns a women's model that easily ranks up there as one of the best watches either of us own.

I also think the Accutron auto chronos are amazing watches, particularly the Geminis from about six or seven years back. I don't get it.

it could be due to the stigma of being an American watch. Most forget that American watch companies were the equal to the Swiss in the past.

I have one vintage hummer and a couple of pre Citizen quartz Accutron.
I also have a European market Bulova that is branded Accutron for the US market. (they did that for awhile-same watches but different branding)
Many purists believe only the "tuning fork" models of the past are worthy of the Accutron label.

Does Accutron outsource out their manufacturing to other Swiss companies or do they own their own factories?

Bulova did own a factory in Switzerland where the Accutrons were manufactured. The tuning fork watches were made in the US.

Tuning fork watches with the 214 module were made in both the US and Switzerland. Serial numbers beginning with a letter indicate it is a US watch, while a serial number beginning with a number designate it as a Swiss manufactured watch.

For me at least its just what I like more. I love my old 214's and 218's. The couple of newer Bulova's I ended up giving away. All in all I for one think all Bulova's are awesome time pieces.

When I try and open the link I get a "malware" warning.

It's fine, just ignore the warning. I received a similar warning fom Google, but went there anyway. Nothing set off my internet security, etc. The site has a lot of useful information.
